For four decades, since 1979 the Soviet–Afghan War, Afghanistan became a country in crisis. The Human Development Report, in 2018 stated that Statistical Update placed Afghanistan 168th out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index. The nation’s most pressing problems include:

  • The massive land under-utilization of agricultural are (less than 30% is cultivated)
  • A severe shortage of irrigation systems, since most of it were damaged or destroyed in the war
  • Although, widespread lack of safe drinking water (95% of the rural population has no access to safe drinking water)
  • A very low literacy level: only 44% of adult males, and only 13% of adult females, can read and write
  • Unemployment, extremely limited employment opportunities
  • As a result of unwanted war, a high percentage of the population (4%) are physically disabled, this fact basically indirectly affects as higher as 10% of other people family members and their communities as well.
